Innovate with purpose
At BILL, we believe in empowering the businesses that drive our economy. By replacing outdated financial processes with innovative tools, we help businesses—from startups to established brands—make smarter decisions and gain control of their operations. And we don’t stop there: we’re creating the future of financial automation so businesses can spend more time on what matters.
Working here means you become part of a vision-driven team that’s ready to tackle challenges and build cutting-edge solutions. We value purpose, drive, and curiosity—and we thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. We're remote-first, with office spaces in San Jose, CA and Draper, UT — and opportunities to connect in person when it counts. BILLders collaborate to deliver real impact for businesses that need more time in their busy weeks.
BILL builds high performing teams and we seek to hire the best talent for every role. We're committed to building a workplace that fosters inclusion and diverse perspectives, valuing each person’s unique skills and experiences. We’d love to hear from you—you might be just what we’re looking for, whether in this role or another.
✨ Let’s give businesses more time for what matters.
We're hiring a Director of Design to own what BILL looks like everywhere it shows up. Every campaign, web experience, video, event, and template that carries the BILL name runs through this team, and the bar for all of it is yours to set. That means leading in-house designers across brand, campaign, motion, and graphic design, and working with agency partners to execute at a high bar.
You'll report to the VP of Marketing and work alongside the leaders of Brand, Web, Partner Marketing, Customer Marketing, Demand Gen, and Product Design. The team you are stepping into has strong talent and real systems. Your job is to grow it and take the visual representation of BILL somewhere bolder and more innovative. This is a leadership job first. You'll spend most of your time on people, process, and partnerships. You'll also stay close enough to the work to concept, art direct, and, when it matters, open the file yourself.
What you'll do
- Lead and grow a team. Set the bar, run critiques worth showing up for, and build a culture where great designers get better.
- Set the creative vision for the BILL brand and drive it through campaigns, web, product marketing, event signage, swag, and more. Make BILL look like nothing else in the category.
- Rebuild how the team works around AI: which tools we use for concepting, production, and versioning, where the guardrails are, and how intake, briefing, and review change so output grows faster than headcount.
- Build video production into something the team ships every week, not occasionally. Decide what we staff, contract, and send to agencies, and put the pipeline and review process in place to ship at a steady cadence.
- Own the brand design system: the standards, templates, and governance that Marketing, agencies, and internal teams build from, and that hold up under real production pressure.
- Run the team end to end like an agency. Own intake, prioritization, and capacity across disciplines; lead the weekly prioritization forum; and manage the budget, contractors, and agency relationships from RFP to delivery.
- Partner with Brand on positioning and expression, with Web on the site and conversion testing, and with Product Design on keeping the brand whole from first ad to first login.
- Write the briefs for the big work, present it to senior leadership, and make the team’s contribution to the business legible.
- Hire, develop, and keep great designers.
What you bring
- 10+ years in design, with at least four leading a multidisciplinary in-house creative team, including managing Creative Directors or other people managers.
- A portfolio with two kinds of receipts: work you made, and work your team made under your direction. Brand and campaign work with a clear point of view.
- Experience building and governing a brand design system in a fast-moving company, and keeping it in use.
- Hands-on experience bringing AI tools into a creative team's workflow, with a real opinion on where they help, where they don't, and how you protect quality along the way.
- Experience producing video and motion for marketing, either directly or by building the team and vendor mix to do it.
- Experience running agencies, contractors, and a budget from RFP through delivery.
- Comfort represents design to C-level partners, making the case for creative quality with clarity and data, and saying no when the work doesn't meet the bar.
- Craft depth across Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, motion and video tools like After Effects and Premiere, and AI-assisted workflows. Enough to evaluate and lift the team's work, and to contribute when needed.
- Bonus points if you've led design through a brand transformation, shaped how AI features get expressed visually in a product people trust with their money, partnered with web and growth teams on redesigns and conversion testing, or worked in fintech or another regulated industry.
What success looks like
- BILL's brand looks distinctive, modern, and unmistakably ours across every channel, and the market notices.
- The design team ships more, faster, with AI built into how the work gets made, and the craft is better, not worse.
- Video is a standing capability with a pipeline, a cadence, and a body of work: social ads, product explainers, and launch films.
- Brand, Web, and Demand gen partners describe the team as an enabler, not a bottleneck.
- The team is innovative and growing. People want to work here. You’re shipping work that makes everyone at BILL proud of where they work.
