As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in architecting and building scalable products that accelerate user acquisition, engagement, and retention. Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and deploy robust, scalable software solutions that directly drive product growth and user engagement
- Lead technical architecture discussions and set engineering standards for the team, ensuring high-quality, maintainable code
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, and Marketing to identify growth opportunities and translate them into technical solutions
- Mentor and guide engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and innovation
- Analyze complex problems, propose effective solutions, and implement best practices to optimize system performance and reliability
- Drive experimentation and rapid iteration, leveraging data to inform decisions and maximize product impact
- Champion BILL’s values by promoting an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance team environment

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field (Master’s a plus); typically 8+ years of relevant industry experience
- Strong understanding of large-scale web applications and systems, including operational aspects (deployment, capacity planning, monitoring, incident management)
- Demonstrated ability to reason about trade-offs and collaborate across teams and functions on important technical and business initiatives
- Experience driving technical direction in multi-entity SaaS architectures and working with modern software development lifecycle practices
Technical Skills & Tools

- Proficiency in:
- Modern programming languages such as, Java, Typescript/Node.js (typical stack at BILL for supplier and payments platforms)
- React or similar frontend frameworks for UI development and supplier portal enhancements nice to have
- Cloud & distributed systems experience:
- AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SNS/SQS, IAM roles and permissions)
- Microservices architecture + API gateway patterns
- Testing, monitoring, and documentation tools:
- Unit and integration test frameworks (Jest, PyTest, JUnit, etc.)
- Application monitoring, logging, and incident response best practices
- CI/CD technologies standard within BILL (likely GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar)
- Proficiency in:
The estimated salary range for this role is noted below for our San Jose based role. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above.
