About the Role:

BILL is rapidly expanding our product portfolio. We are seeking an influential “player-coach” researcher to manage the research portfolio of our industry-leading Payments product. This includes all aspects of people and performance management for 2-3 direct reports and periodically conducting research for a single agile Payments team. This person will manage project prioritization and resource planning; set team goals based upon business objectives; and oversee quality and craft of research findings for maximum impact. We need a strong collaborator to work with cross-functional partners to understand strategic and tactical questions, craft and execute research roadmaps, and connect findings across other data.

The BILL Research team focuses on empowering customer-centric decision making in the context of business imperatives. We are system thinkers, facilitators, and change agents. We influence cross functional teams throughout the customers’ end-to-end journey. We use mixed method approaches (quant and qual) to bring the customer into the day to day product development process.

Responsibilities & Outcomes

  • Intake and prioritize research projects and allocate resources to meet both business and employee needs.
  • Craft and deliver research projects that positively impact product strategy and execution efforts across the portfolio of BILL products.
  • Create and deliver actionable insights that will help the business find and solve underserved customer needs and/or alleviate customer pain.
  • Become the go-to expert for all payments touch points, as well as a perspective for holistic, end-to-end experiences.
  • Manage and develop a team of growth-oriented researchers. Support them to do their best work at BILL.
  • Strong influencing skills and ability to impact decision making across Product and Design Leadership.
  • Influential contributor to Research team culture and practice.

You bring:

  • 8+ years managing teams and leading work with cross functional partners through product inception, launch, and ongoing iteration. Experienced owning all phases of research (i.e., foundational through evaluative) and demonstrated ability to forge trusting partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Deep passion for unpacking ambiguous questions and understanding customer behaviors, needs, and opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of how to leverage market, competitive, and behavioral data to create products that customers love.
  • A desire to always expand your craft, explore new paradigms, and learn from and with other curious researchers.
  • Experience blending methodologies, using research tools in unexpected ways, and triangulating data across internal and external data sets.
  • The ability to deliver a research roadmap that balances short and long term needs.
  • Seasoned storyteller who knows their audience and knows how to deliver memorable findings and actionable provocations.
  • Curious mindset and interest in building foundations for research success.

Nice to haves

Competencies (Attributes needed to be successful in this role):

  • At least 5 years of managerial experience, directly coaching and developing researchers
  • Expertise in Mixed Methods and Research Craft - quantitative and qualitative
  • Strong collaborator / Team Player - strong collaboration with PM, PD, PMM/MR, CX, and DS
  • Storytelling - clear, targeted, and impactful communication

The estimated salary range for this role is noted below for our San Jose based role. Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed above. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits.

$192,000$240,000 USD
